IN A REMARKABLE turn of events, the race named in honour of Mallala’s circuit owner has been won by his good friend.

Kerrick Sports Sedan series stalwart Jeff Barnes won today’s feature race – named after his good mate Clem Smith, the Mallala promoter and a long time fan and competitor in Sports Sedan racing – after a series of events ruled out the three major contenders for the series' biggest race of the year.

Barnes also won the round and dedicated his victory to another mate of his – Sports Sedan champion Des Wall – who passed away late last year. Barnes is running Wall’s racing number (#38) this season as a tribute to his mate.

Rookies ready for second round of Kumho Series in South Australia

WHILE South Australian Chris Smerdon may be the defending round winner at his home circuit at Mallala Motorsport Park, there is a range of local young guns keen to follow in his wheel tracks this weekend in the second round of the Kumho Tyres Australian V8 Touring Car Series.

Adelaide teenagers Dan Day and Josh Kean are only just starting their respective V8 careers but both have experience on the 2.6-kilometre circuit that should hold them in good stead this weekend.

18-year-old Day comes from a rallying background, while Kean has made the step up from six-cylinder Saloon Cars in just his second ever year of car racing.

YOUNG SOUTH AUSTRALIAN talent will aim to be at the front of some of Australia’s most competitive national racing categories at Mallala Raceway this weekend.

Round two of the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Championships arrives at the 2.6km circuit north of Adelaide this weekend with local drivers racing at the forefront of almost every category on the program – including the ever-expanding Kumho V8 Touring Car Series and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Pirelli.

The upcoming April 6th & 7th MallaNats is set to be a very National event as many BIG name interstate entries are making their way to Mallala.

Along wilth close to record entries we see multiple SummerNats Champ Adam Slorach from Victoria heading over, he will be bringing his HR Ute NUMNUTZ. Steve Nogas also from Victoria will be bringing KILLA-B. WA's Matt Purnell will bringing BLACKOUT and Justin Brown is bringing WANAGO.

Tom Monkhouse has started the 2013 G1 Drift Series in style!


The 2013 G1 Drift Series got off to great start with one of the most entertaining rounds in the series 9 year history. The new format was a big success as the day flowed well. We also had a record 57 entrants and one of the biggest crowds in recent G1 history! The big crowd was treated to some amazing battles and open track action.

Monkhouse took the win after close battles with Anthony Cece in the final. Cece finished in a strong second position. This was Monkhouse’s 4^th round win from the last 7 rounds.

The top 2 highest qualifiers Daniel Prior and Phil Branson battled for third place. Prior took third.

Kelly Wong was the second 16 winner beating Shane Murphy in the final.

2013 starts in February with a motor cycle ride day on the 2^nd of February and Round 1 of the G1 Drift Series on the 3^rd of February.

The track will be closed during January for upgrades including moving the wall back at turn 4 and the building of a brand new medical facility.

All your favourite events will be back in 2013. The G1 Drift Series returns for its ninth year with its traditional three rounds and it is moving back to its original format. The fun 10/10 Matsuri will back with two events. The Australian Drifting Grand Prix will return in October. MallaNats will be back with two events once again and it moves back to its traditional two day format. The SCC State Series will be back with a four round series and the always popular traditional Easter Historics also returns.

We look forward to another BIG year at Mallala Motorsport Park in 2013.

The April event attracted record competitor entries and crowd numbers only to be bettered again at the December event!

MallaNats returns to Mallala Motorsport Park for the second time in 2012 this December.

The Saturday December 1^st event is just around the corner and everyone’s favourite events will be back: Burnouts, Drags, Powerskid, Go to Whoa, Sound Off, Show ‘n Shine, Extreme Entry Comp & Cruise the Track. The popular Drift Asylum will also be back as the drifters unleash for a day on the Mallala skid pan.

MallaNats is in its fourth year and has become the most enjoyable ‘Nats’ show on the Australian calendar. The first MallaNats of the year in April was another fun filled entertaining event with near record entries and a record crowd.

As Australia's best drifters make their way back to Mallala! Expect some of the most insane drift action and a large crowd to soak in all the entertainament.

G1 Extreme Drift Series Round 2

The G1 Drift Series is the longest running Drift Series in the country and it continues its 8^th season with Round 2 on the 1^st July. The G1 format had a tune up over the summer break and the changes worked very well at Round 1 in February with near record entries.

The 2012 Drift Supercup will feature two separate Drift classes, performing the high-speed tandem sideways action which has made Drifting the fastest growing form of motorsport in the world.

The Street Class drivers have considerable experience at state or national level, and the Pro Class drivers have already competed at the highest level in national and international events.

The April 28th event attracted over 130 entrants and the BIGGEST crowd seen at Mallala in recent times. The weather was perfect as the one day event kicked of just after 8am. There was plenty of track time for all as the large crowd enjoyed lots of tough cars and entertaining action in all of the track events.

The off track entertainment was just as exciting as the Dyno Challenge produced some great results (see in results section below). The ‘Trade Ally’ was buzz and full of activity, traders were kept busy by the large crowd flowing through all day. There was free face painting for the kids adding a carnival feel to the event. The pit paddock and the open grass area was full of cars. Between the event show n shine and the ACC & ACE Car Club displays there were plenty of cars to look at.

Kerry Baily won the Clem Smith Cup and took a clean sweep in the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series under picture perfect conditions at Mallala today, at the Shannons Nationals presented by Hi-Tec Oils.

Baily and Corvette driver Des Wall led from the beginning and though Wall remained within a few seconds of the stunning new Aston Martin, never got quite close enough to challenge for the win in Sports Sedans’ marquee race – named in honour of the former racer and Mallala circuit owner.

The Shannons Nationals return this weekend for one of the most popular stops on the nine-round calendar, South Australia’s Mallala Motorsport Park, with the best program of categories ever assembled for a SN round at the circuit.

Thundering Sports Sedans, the biggest field of V8s to race at Mallala since the early 2000s, the exotic Porsche one-make competition, the Holden Versus Ford battle of the Saloon Cars are all on the program, to be joined by the wheel-to-wheel action of the V8 Commodore Cup and the Australian Swift Racing Series.

A variety of events includes a 50-minute Porsche endurance race on Saturday evening, plus a host of shorter action-packed sprint races for five other categories.

The opening round of the G1 Drift Series on February 25^th was a scorcher with the temperature up over 40 degrees. It was a challenging day for all but still highly entertaining and fun.

It was the first running of the G1 Open Track.  Everyone entered got plenty of track time.

The new G1 format worked well which kept the program moving and the entertainment coming. There were many outstanding drives from the near record 54 entrants. It was great to see that 28 of these entries were new to the Series.

Australia’s favourite drift series returns to Mallala, as the G1 Drift Series launches its 8th season with Round 1.

We can't wait for the revamped G1 Series to get underway. It has undergone a bit of tune up over the break and is geared up for its biggest year yet.

Changes across the board have been implemented with a fresh new G1 Format to look forward to. Near record entries, with 53 cars entered into the Comp and 22 cars entered in the ‘Open Track’. There will be plenty of action on and off the track as we anticipate big crowd.

Clem Smith the owner of Mallala Motorsport Park celebrated his 85th Birthday this week!

Clem is still the driving force at Mallala and very much involved in all operations at the track.

Over 120 cars were split into 3 groups and given 12 hours of open track time on both the Mallala Track and Skid Pan. There was plenty to do for the drifters and the large crowd was treated to some entertaining drifting as well.

It is going to be another busy year at Mallala with many drive/practice days and all of your favourite events. There will be new events and changes to some old ones. Keep an eye on the Mallala Website for all event details.

The MallaNats competitions included Burnouts, Drags, Go to Whoa, Dyno Challenge, Power Skids, Show 'n Shine, plus the Drift Asylum and the popular track cruises.

After a very successful and popular inaugural 10/10 Matsuri in July this year it is all back by popular demand. The July event attracted one of the biggest drift crowds in recent times despite the wet weather as well as over 170 drifters. The format gave both the drifters and crowd an entertaining day of drift with nonstop action for 12 hours straight.

The 2011 G1 Drift Series continued with Round 2 on Sunday 24th July. Round 1 in March delivered one of the best Rounds in G1 history and Round 2 didn't disappoint either.  Just like Round 1 there was some incredibly close drifting.

All day the standard of drift on display was amazing and finished with one of the most entertaining Top 4 battles.

Entries for Round 2 are strong with all the big guns all coming out to play which means it will be another close round.

The Championship is wide open with many looking to push themselves up the championship table.

Round 1 on March 5th had a bit of everything with some of the closest drifting seen at G1, as the final battles went down to the wire. G1 veteran James Mardle took out the opening round over Dale Campaign. Third went to 2010 G1 Champion Simon Michelmore.

This Saturday will see over 180 drift cars hit the Mallala circuit and the brand new Mallala skid pan. What will you see? Lots of open track time, no competition, passengers will be allowed (conditions apply). The brand new Mallala Skid Pan will also get its first official work out at an event.

This will be one of the biggest gathering of drift cars in one place in Australian drift history!

There will be three groups of different skill level rotating from the track to the skid pan throughout the day.

This action packed day cannot be missed! Spectators entry is ONLY $15 with kids under 14 FREE.

Rnd#2 2011 Shannons Nationals - Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Cars
Mallala, May 13-15

Just 12 months ago, V8 Touring Car ‘veteran’ Chris Smerdon (Smerdon Racing) sat on pole position for the series second round at his home circuit, but a lot had changed for the category since the Shannons Nationals was last at Mallala Motor Sports Park.

It wasn’t just the series that had changed either, Smerdon himself was behind the wheel of a ‘new’ car having taken delivery of the ex-James Courtney BA Falcon built by Stone Brothers Racing during the second half of the 2010 season.

Whilst an immaculate example of SBR engineering, Smerdon had not conducted any test laps on the South Australian circuit - a circuit he admitted rewarded local knowledge - so he was making no early predictions as the 15-strong field lined up for opening practice on Friday morning.

PREVIEW: RND#2, 2011 SHANNONS NATIONALS - Mallala, SA (May 13-15)

Mallala Motor Sport Park will reverberate to the sound of V8 Touring Cars this weekend during round two of the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships.

A strong field of Kumho Tyres supported V8 Touring Cars will be led by local driver, and the series’ inaugural champion, Chris Smerdon in his ex-James Courtney Stone Brothers Racing BA Falcon. Smerdon is no stranger to Mallala, but the pole-sitter from the 2010 round will have his hands full this weekend balancing learning a new car, with combating the onslaught from one of the strongest fields in the series history.

Mallala Motor Sport Park (May 13-15)

Mallala will resound to a once familiar battle cry, when the V8 Touring Cars return to the South Australian venue to continue the now famous Holden versus Ford rivalry during round two of the 2011 Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships over the May 14-15 weekend.

 A full field of Kumho Tyres supported V8 Touring Cars, cars with a heritage linked to some of the greats, from Craig Lowndes to Mark Skaife, Russell Ingall and John Bowe, will line up for what is turning out to be one of the hottest categories on the Australian circuit racing scene this year.

Drift is alive and well in SA. Mallala’s latest  Drift School has a record 73 entries for May 7^th.

The additional numbers will be easily catered for because of the new skid pan which is ideal for developing drift skills.

Over recent years the Drift School has provided an ideal ‘hands on’ training ground for up and coming drifters. Experienced G1 drivers spend the day teaching the theoretical and practical side of drifting as well as sharing first hand competition experiences.

With so many entries the future of drift in Australia is looking bright and we look forward to seeing these drivers at future 10/10 Matsuri and G1 Drift events.

The inaugural 10/10 Matsuri will be at Mallala Motorsport Park on July 2^nd.

This is a traditional style Matsuri or drift festival event bringing drifters with a variety of experience together for a massive day (and night) of drift. There will be lots of open track time, no competition and passengers allowed.

Matsuri is a festival that celebrates drift that takes away the pressure of competition and allows a bunch of people to come together to enjoy drifting and drift culture.

South Australian Simon Michelmore showed why he is one of the premier drift racers in Australia taming both the wet and tricky conditions as well as a classy field of local and interstate drivers at last weekends Drift Supercup at Mallala Motorsport Park.

2010 G1 champion Michelmore made the best of the tricky conditions which saw the circuit become wet and then dry again in a matter of minutes at times. Michelmore won the Pro Class battle from fellow SA driver Tom Monkhouse who had his own battle to make the final after a collision with Christian Pickering in the Top 4 Battle final as well as a rerun to contend with in the same round.
